How to use holy water

The sacred blessing

Holy water is a salt water mixture that has been blessed by a Priest for the purposes of consecration. It's primary use is in the sacred rites of the Catholic and Orthodox churches. Some more Traditional Anglican/Episcopal churches also use holy water but that has declined in recent years.

Popular use and mythology within the entertainment industry has it that holy water is also useful in fighting vampires, witches and zombies. More than ridicule, it shows that even in our overwhelmingly secular society holy water is thought to be a potent antidote to evil. Because all evidence of holy water use in this manner is anecdotal, caution should be used when confronting these creatures.

Instructions
Step 1
Baptism

Holy water is used for baptism within the church. The Catholic church administers baptism by pouring the water over the head of the person being baptised three times. Once each for the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This water is contained in the baptismal font and the rite is normally one of great joy as it not only signifies that there is a new member to the church itself but also that the person being baptised has chosen a new life in Christ.

Step 2
Renewing the baptismal promise

As you enter a Catholic or Orthodox church you will see a holy water font. The parishioners will dip their fingers into it and cross themselves, that is they will touch the damp fingers of their right hand to their forehead, breastbone, left breast and then right breast. This is a symbolic renewing of the promises made at baptism.

The Catholic church is more relaxed about it but within the Orthodox churches the placement of the fingers of the right hand is very important. The first two fingers and the thumb are pressed together, symbolic of the Trinity. The Orthodox also reverse the right and left breast crossing so that the right breast is touched first.

Tips & Warnings
If you run out of Holy water, you can fill up your bottle for free (or a small donation) at your local Catholic church.
Step 3
Blessings at home

Small holy water fonts are not unusual in Catholic homes. This allows the family to bless themselves as they leave home in the belief that Christ will help to protect them and that they will conduct themselves in a Christ-like manner.

Step 4
Fighting evil

In the event you should come across a vampire that doesn't sparkle, isn't a "vegetarian" or a tortured soul that refuses to kill humans, you may wish to use holy water to repel him. The basic method is quite simple: Throw holy water on him, bless him in the name of Christ and run. In the event you don't want to get that close, a wooden stake dipped into holy water and then shot from a crossbow works well.

These methods can also be used on zombies with equally successful results. Contrary to popular belief, holy water itself has no effect on witches. They are immune to both the water and the blessing. It's the salt that slows them down. Because it's so diluted when mixed with water, just use a handful of plain salt. Throw it and run. This is not effective on any witch or wizard that graduated from Hogwarts.
